History

Initially called the Brotherhood of Painters and Decorators of America, then the International Brotherhood of Painters and Allied Trades as more trades were added and most recently named the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades to better reflect the diversity of the workers that are represented.

Local 177 of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades was formed in 1993 to combine the 3 existing Locals in Alberta into one local that could serve the members. The three locals that were combined were Local 1016 in Edmonton, and Locals 583 and 1725 in Calgary.

Local 1016 in Edmonton was formed in 1904 and has served continuously in the northern Alberta area since that time. It has represented painters, glaziers, glassworkers and allied trades throughout this time.

Local 583 in Calgary was formed in 1908 and represented the painters for the southern Alberta area.

Local 1725 was formed in 1950 and represented the glaziers and glassworkers in southern Alberta.
In 1990 the three locals decided that the workers in Alberta could be better served by combining our efforts in a province wide organization. District Council 77 was formed at this time and represented all the trades of the IUPAT until the formation of Local 177 in 1993.

The IUPAT has represented painters and allied trades in the province of Alberta for 100 years.
